Tobias (Andrew Garfield) is hit by a car driven by Almut (Florence Pugh)
Story
An up-and-coming chef and a recent divorcee find their lives forever changed when a chance encounter brings them together in a deeply moving love story that spans a decade. Florence Pugh has described filming this project as “one of the highlights of [her] career.” Is It a Sin Written by Al Hazan Starring Allie Hazan.
He is newly divorced, she has just gotten out of a lesbian relationship
She stays in the hospital until he wakes up and because – despite having a broken arm and wearing a cervical collar – he has already been released (there aren’t enough beds available – political commentary!) she takes him out to dinner. Despite this unpromising start, there is mutual attraction and the pair begin a relationship that lasts years.
The two leads make an engaging couple
Pugh, in particular, is easy to accept as the fiery Almut. Garfield plays the nice guy Tobias who is a little too nerdy to be completely believable, but he manages to be on the right side of annoying (and, if the nice bare butt in the bathroom scene is his and not a stunt double, he has a nice ass – just saying…).
I’m not sure I’d watch it again, but I’m glad I saw it at least once
No other actor gets enough screen time to make an impact, although I was impressed to see Douglas Hodge play Tobias’ father – twenty or thirty years ago, he probably would have played the male lead himself. This is a good example of a chick flick: romantic, sappy, and leaves no one dry-eyed in the house.
