Steve Martin actually plays a concert in different scenes
Story
Three strangers – who live in the same New York apartment building and share an obsession with true crime – suddenly find themselves involved in a murder. He is actually a very skilled and talented musician. The viewer learned in the first episode that CHS lived above Oliver, who lived above Mabel with that elevator scene. BUT the opener has CHS in an apartment on the 7th floor, Oliver on the 8th, Mabel on the 9th — in reverse order and well below CHS’s actual appropriate floor in the series. Featured in AniMati’s Crazy Cartoon: The Rat of All My Dreams (2020). Season 1 (9/10) When this series came out, my girlfriend wasn’t particularly interested.
New York in Five Minutes
I’m a huge fan of comedic mysteries and loved Steve Martin when I was young, but her enthusiasm for either is mild. But after five minutes, I had to stop and make him watch it because we’re New Yorkers and this show fits the bill. The weird relationships with passersby, the artsy types, the justified paranoia, it was all there and instantly hilarious. The show is about a trio of murder podcast fanatics who become involved in a real murder in their luxury apartment building. Soon they’re investigating the case and broadcasting podcasts. But they’re also keeping secrets from each other in a wonderful mystery-within-a-mystery structure.
The cast is great
Everyone has secrets, the show says, and digging deep is a fascinating exercise. Martin is understatedly funny, Short, who I’m usually lukewarm about, is very funny as a brilliant theater director, and Selena Gomez is more than just oddly hilarious as a cheeky temporary tenant. This show has been a hot ticket item as far as I know – I’m sure my friends (and other New Yorkers) love it – so I was shocked to see how many user reviews just hate this show or find it mediocre, to the point where they demand that all positive reviews be paid. This response is beyond me. The show is amazing. When the new episode came out, we immediately watched it.
Season 3 (6/10): What the hell happened?
It’s just so, so, so, so good. Never mind the naysayers, this is a must-see. Other seasons: Season 2 (8/10): A weaker tone than the first season, but still excellent. In the third season, Steve Martin played his character as a complete idiot, and after two great seasons, Selena Gomez became lackluster – darker and less witty. And when the mystery was solved, oh my god, these were the most absurd motives you could come up with. Sure, there were still some good moments, some great guest stars, some surprisingly enjoyable songs.
Probably the second best season after the first
But OMG. Season 4 (9 stars) To my great relief, Season 4 was a return to form – Martin was no longer an idiot and Gomez’s delightful snark was fully restored. There are some hilarious celebrity guest stars – Eva Longoria is particularly hilarious, playing a truly awful person – the mystery is solid and keeps you guessing, the plot twists are satisfying, and it’s all very funny.
